In New York, the Duchess of Sussex – self-appointed patron saint of worthiness – glided through Manhattan to read extracts of her new book to underprivileged pupils at the PS 123 school in Harlem.

But emerging from her gas-guzzling entourage of blacked-out vehicles, the duchess’ arrival at the innercity academy was more Hillary Clinton than Mother Teresa.

Venturing into a school where nine out of 10 children are from families too poor to buy them lunch, you might think a celebrity visitor would decide to dress down.
