He was both handsome and rich – but was Laura’s new man just too good to be true?

You’re telling me Mr Porsche has asked you out?’ Beth gaped at her sister, Laura. And Laura nodded. ‘Yep. He was leaving after a meeting and stopped by my reception desk. He said, “I don’t suppose you fancy dinner with me on Friday evening, do you?” I couldn’t believe it.’

‘Is this the guy you’ve been raving about – the one who’s absolutely gorgeous and around your age?’ Beth asked.

‘Jem Carmichael. He always turns up in his silver Porsche. When he’s booked an appointment, I let everyone know in the office, and, via CCTV, we all watch him arrive. It’s not often that a Porsche pulls up outside the council building,’ Laura chuckled.

‘Wow! It sounds like something out of a rom-com.’

Yet it wasn’t just Jem who was in Laura’s sights. She also had a secret crush on a colleague called Chas. She hadn’t confided in Beth about it because, basically, it was going nowhere.

Good-looking, with a tall, muscular frame and intelligent face, Chas was perfect boyfriend material.

But he’d never asked Laura out. So when Mr Porsche had asked for a date, she decided it was time to move on, and accepted the offer.

‘I envy you, Laura. I’d welcome a bit of sparkle in my life. I and Rob simply plod along,’ Beth sighed.

‘Why not book a weekend away? A cheap B&B on the coast?’ Laura suggested.

‘Rob will only go on holiday in this country if it’s warm weather. “I’m not shivering on the beach,” he says. He’s got a point I suppose, but… he’s not even swayed by a pint with the lads.’
