Beautiful Brighton

Why go?

Forget your bucket and spade – with designer shops, Michelin-starred eateries and strong royal links, there’s more to this bustling East Sussex destination than its famous pier and pebbled beaches.

Royal connections

Situated around 65 miles from London, it’s no surprise that, historically, Brighton proved popular with royals wanting a break from the capital to enjoy the medicinal sea air – and some secret partying! Originally built as a retreat for the Prince Regent, later King George IV, by architect John Nash, the Royal Pavilion (brightonmuseums.org.uk) is ideal for history buffs to explore.

Now more than 200 years old, see everything both upstairs and down, including the King’s suite, Queen Victoria’s bedroom and the Great Kitchen, which was considered innovative for its time. Then head across the gardens to the Theatre Royal, where a backstage tour will reveal how fisherman’s huts were joined together to create the impressive building standing today.
