<strong>Easing open the bedroom door, I could immediately tell something was wrong. Then&nbsp;one evening, in January 2015, we settled down to watch Bethany&rsquo;s favourite show, The Undateables. It was on Channel 4 and featured people with various disabilities being set up on dates. At first, I feared it was some sort of crude reality show. But, watching it with Bethany, I saw how empowering the programme&rsquo;s message was. It showed, regardless of who you were, everyone deserved the chance to find love.&nbsp;At the end of the episode an advert popped up asking for participants for the next series. &lsquo;I want to do that,&rsquo; Bethany said. I thought she was joking but two weeks later, she said again about applying, so I decided to ask her stepdad, Chris, what he thought.&nbsp;He was reluctant. &lsquo;She needs to understand what could happen if she puts herself out there,&rsquo; he said. &lsquo;People could be mean and hurt her feelings.&rsquo;&nbsp;I felt the same. We had seen how people could react to her &ndash; the stares. But when I thought about how intelligent and hilarious she was, I just knew people would love her.&nbsp;<strong>A leap of faith</strong>&nbsp;I fired off an email to the production company. And after a chat with a producer a few weeks later, Bethany was cast. She was thrilled when I told her. In August 2015, the production team came to our home in Burbage, Leicestershire. They were so sensitive about setting the right tone that I knew Bethany&rsquo;s story was in safe hands.&nbsp;In September 2015, she was set up on a date with a young man named Bradley. They met at a local cafe, with Bradley arriving armed with a box of chocolates. It was just them and a cameraman, and I waited nervously in the production van outside. But&nbsp;when Bethany emerged, two hours later, with a huge smile across her face, I could tell it had gone well.&nbsp;A couple of months on, the show set her up on a second date with a boy named Myles, who had Down&rsquo;s syndrome. I quizzed Bethany about the dates, but it wasn&rsquo;t until the show aired, in January 2016, that I really found out what happened. I couldn&rsquo;t believe how confident she was. I was so proud of her. Sadly, Bradley lived too far away and Bethany, 19, said she thought Myles at 17, was too young!&nbsp;As soon as the programme aired, Bethany&rsquo;s Twitter and Facebook were bombarded with messages from fans of the show, saying how much they loved her. There wasn&rsquo;t a single negative comment. The boost to her confidence was amazing. Finally, we had the old Bethany back.&nbsp;Then a month later, my sister-inlaw called. A friend of hers who was a support worker looked after a 30- year-old man named Tom, who had Down&rsquo;s syndrome. He&rsquo;d seen Bethany&rsquo;s episode and wanted to ask her out.&nbsp;I put it to Bethany, then 20, and a week later she and Tom met for a meal. It went so well, they started dating and, over a year later, they are still happy together.&nbsp;I&rsquo;ll never regret Bethany being in The Undateables. On the TV, people could see how Down&rsquo;s syndrome doesn&rsquo;t define my girl &ndash; it&rsquo;s just part of what makes her so amazing.
