Coronation Street’s Sally Dynevor reveals her biggest frustration and the secret to a great marriage...
Sally Dynevor, 53, has played social climber Sally Metcalfe on Corrie since 1986, a role that’s seen her character battle breast cancer, discover her ex’s affair and finally marry her now husband Tim Metcalfe. But this week things take a turn for the busybody mum, with the discovery her daughter Rosie [Helen Flanagan] has been a drugs mule, something that brings the councillor back to earth with a bump. Woman’s Own caught up with the actress – who lives in Cheshire with her Emmerdale scriptwriter husband Tim Dynevor and kids Phoebe, 21, Sam, 19, and Hattie, 13 – to find out more.
Hi Sally! This week Rosie’s secret comes out... how?
Rosie’s cleaning windows for Kevin [Michael Le Vell]. Sally can’t understand why. She thinks he’s stopping Rosie continuing her modelling and says, ‘Why is she cleaning windows? You do it. She’s got a successful career.’ Anna Windass [Debbie Rush] butts in and Sally says, ‘What do you know? You’re not a very good mother!’ Anna says, ‘Neither are you. You don’t even know your daughter’s carrying drugs!’
How does Sally react?
She’s shocked. Her initial thought is, ‘I’m in this political role. How’s that going to impact on me?’ She says, ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’ Rosie breaks down and says, ‘I didn’t want to tell you my life wasn’t going well. I didn’t want you to be disappointed in me. I’ve had a terrible time. Men have treated me badly.’ It dawns on Sally how terrible it is that your daughter won’t tell you something because they’re worried you’ll be disappointed in them. She feels guilty.
And then Rosie gets sexually harassed…
