Otherwise, it is recommended that sunscreen be reapplied every two hours,&rsquo; says Dr Mammone.&nbsp;According to Abi Cleeve, MD at Ultrasun UK, adults should wear a minimum of SPF30 while in the UK, and SPF50 in hotter climates. &lsquo;We test all our sun protection to a maximum of eight hours&rsquo; continuous sun exposure,&rsquo; says Abi.&nbsp;How much cream should I apply?&nbsp;Your sun cream only gives you the protection on the bottle if you&rsquo;re applying the right amount &ndash; and we bet it&rsquo;s more than you think. &lsquo;When using creams and lotions, you should apply a minimum of six full teaspoons to cover the body of an average adult for each application,&rsquo; says Rebecca Bennett, health professional at Johnson &amp; Johnson. &lsquo;That means you should be getting through around four 200ml bottles of sun cream per adult per week.&rsquo; Apply your sun cream indoors 30 minutes before exposure to sun to ensure you cover every inch.&nbsp;Does the texture make a difference?&nbsp;It&rsquo;s no secret that kids (and grumpy husbands) don&rsquo;t enjoy the sticky feeling that accompanies sun lotion, so mists, with their quick-to-absorb, featherlight finish, would seem to be a better option. But the question is, can an aerosol deliver the same protection as a lotion? &lsquo;Sprays can give a false sense of security,&rsquo; says Abi. If you&rsquo;re going to use a spray, get a good, even coating, then rub it in. &lsquo;The other issue with sprays and gels is evaporation,&rsquo; adds Abi. &lsquo;You can lose up to 60% before it&rsquo;s had a chance to bind with your skin, so always apply indoors.&rsquo; So for consistent protection, particularly for kids, creams are best.&nbsp;Is fake tan with SPF a good idea?&nbsp;Rocking up at the resort with pasty milk-bottle legs can make you feel a little self-conscious, so we&rsquo;re all for the confidence-boosting benefits of a pre-holiday spray tan. But if you&rsquo;re going to fake before you bake, you&rsquo;ll need a good gap before sun exposure as self-tan can impact the UVA and UVB filters in sun cream. Tan two to three days before your hols to protect those essential ingredients. And do not be fooled by tanners with &lsquo;added SPF&rsquo;. It&rsquo;s a con. &lsquo;The primary ingredient in self-tan, DHA, is such a strong chemical, it can attack more fragile ingredients like UVA filters and compromise their efficacy,&rsquo; warns Abi. Tinted sun creams, however, are totally safe if you&rsquo;re after a beach boost.&nbsp;Does waterproof really mean waterproof?&nbsp;Once-a-day, waterproof sunscreens are a Godsend to a family of water babies. Officially, these pool-friendly sunscreens must still provide the SPF quoted on the bottle after 40 minutes of swimming &ndash; and yes, they are generally more reliable and long-lasting. But according to Rebecca, they should really be regarded as &lsquo;water resistant&rsquo;. &lsquo;If you&rsquo;re hopping in and out of the pool, then rubbing yourself dry afterwards, sunscreen must be reapplied immediately to ensure protection is maintained,&rsquo; she advises.
