What are your first memories of presenting alongside each other?
SUSANNA: A blur of words, noise and trying to get a word in. He came in – he would say like a super tornado, I describe it more like a mini hurricane – and nothing has ever been the same again.
PIERS: The look of utter terror when I veered completely off-script after about 10 seconds. I think that was the moment Susanna realized her calm, safe, organized life was never going to be the same again.
Was there a light-bulb moment when you both realised the pair of you would make such a winning combination?
SUSANNA: When it was two o’clock in the morning and we were still knocking back shots in a bar in Soho.
PIERS: Yes, it was when some French guy who climbs buildings uttered the ‘F’ word during our first show together. Susanna freaked out and apologised in that very serious headmistress manner she has, and I just laughed out loud. In the break, she told me I had to treat those moments seriously, and I replied, ‘No I don’t,’ and there was a pause before she started giggling and said, ‘Well, I do!’ That was the moment I realized we’d have a great yin and yang.
The ratings say it all: GMB has been a lifeline in the mornings.
