Twiggy is 70 next year, but the 60s icon shows absolutely no signs of slowing down just yet.
It seems incredible that Twiggy will celebrate her 70th birthday next year. ‘I can’t ever lie about my age,’ she says, ‘because everyone’s known it since I was 16 and became a worldwide public figure. Having said that, there’s nothing you can do about getting older. I think you have to embrace and enjoy it. I don’t want to tempt fate [she touches the wooden table in front of her] but I’m healthy and happy. So I’m going to celebrate hitting 70.’
Certainly, the woman sitting opposite could easily pass for someone at least 10 years younger. There’s a vivacity about her with that easy laugh of hers, that open manner. ‘I’ve always lived in the moment,’ she says when asked about her unquenchable zest for life.
Much, she says, is down to her tight-knit family and the love that flows between them all. ‘They’ve always been my safety net,’ she says. ‘It used to be my mum and dad and my two sisters. Well, our parents have gone now, but I’m still close to my sisters, and then there’s Leigh [Lawson, fellow actor and husband] and the kids, and now we’ve got the bubbies. It’s the best.’
This year, her only child, daughter Carly – from her first marriage to American actor Michael Witney – turns 40.
