THE STORY SO FAR: Instead of selling the house she’d inherited from her aunt, Carrie has decided to make a dramatic life move from London to the wild Hebridean island she’d loved visiting as a child. Newly divorced, she has thrown herself into island life – getting to know the locals and growing close to the kind, supportive Joe. She was all set to embark on upgrading Plover House to let out rooms to visitors when her ex-husband Paul showed up unannounced. Launching into home improvements, he seemed to be on exemplary ‘husband’ behaviour. The trouble is, he isn’t her husband any more. And when she spots a message from the mysterious Anna on his phone, Carrie realises she has almost been taken in yet again…
Carrie had been busy. As busy, in fact, as she’d been in her old job in London. But now it was her thing – she was her own boss now – which meant the work didn’t feel like work at all.
The main bedroom was ready and the dining room was spruced up too. From local craftspeople, she had picked up cushions and pottery, and with her new friend Helen she had gathered driftwood and sea glass to give the house a beachy feel.
She had ticked off all the safety requirements in order to accommodate guests, and even planned the full Scottish breakfasts she would offer, with eggs from Kim’s neighbouring farm.
Now, on the verge of advertising the rooms, Carrie should have been fizzing with excitement. But she wasn’t – because something didn’t feel right.
