Despite being overwhelmed by grief at losing her beloved other half, Helena Bailey breaks into a warm smile when reflecting on her happy 35-year marriage to her TV icon husband Mike Bailey.
“We were the best of friends, and the loves of one another’s lives. I vividly remember the day we met. It was at a Channel Seven telethon in 1981. Mike was the weather presenter on Seven’s Sydney news, and I was hosting Romper Room. We hit it off immediately, and became close friends,” Miss Helena tells Woman’s Day in an exclusive chat just days after Mike’s sad passing. “We’d sometimes run into one another around the studio and always had a laugh. Then, a few years later, Mike asked me to lunch and that strictly platonic dynamic changed.
“The romance surprised me at first, as Mike was two years younger than me, but it just evolved so naturally.
“We married in 1986 and had the most wonderful life together. Our relationship was built on truth and trust, and we unanimously supported each other and our diverse careers.
