As Britain’s longest-serving monarch, the Queen has faced her fair share of agonising challenges and public humiliations.

But in the wake of Prince Philip’s horror car crash, in which her 97-year-old husband accidentally ploughed his armour-plated Land Rover into a car carrying two women and a baby, Her Majesty is facing one of her greatest challenges yet: How to tell the Duke of Edinburgh he should never drive again.

Palace insiders say the Queen was “shaken to the core” when she received news her husband of 71 years had been involved in a potentially fatal accident on a public highway close to their Sandringham Estate.

Philip hit a vehicle carrying Ellie Townsend, 28, her nine-month-old son and her friend Emma Fair weather, 46, after being “dazzled by the sun” while pulling out of a side street. Emma suffered a broken wrist, Ellie was treated for cuts and the baby was unharmed.

The prince, meanwhile, was miraculously uninjured but needed to be pulled from the sunroof of his 1.8-tonne vehicle, which had flipped on its side.
