The duchess falls foul of her fans
Ever since she was an aspiring actress, she’d dreamed of appearing in the prestigious fashion bible and couldn’t wait to show off the “Force for Change” project she’d poured her heart and soul into.
Turning down the opportunity to appear on the cover for fear of appearing “boastful”, Meghan instead asked to guest edit the magazine, hand-picking 15 “trailblazing” women to feature – including our own Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
“Through this lens I hope you’ll feel the strength of the collective in the diverse selection of women chosen for the cover,” Meghan wrote.
But the former Suits star has been left devastated, angry and embarrassed after a storm of criticism broke out in the wake of the publication, with allegations of hypocrisy, narcissism and even plagiarism levelled at the new mum.
“Meghan is in pieces over this,” tells an insider. “She truly believed she was doing an amazing thing, but once again she’s being criticised in ways she never could have imagined. Even palace aides are disapproving and she is beginning to feel she’ll never find her place in this royal world she’s married into.”
Appearances in Vogue are nothing new for the royal family, with Princess Diana and Princess Anne both taking part in photo shoots over the years. The Duchess of Cambridge also graced the cover, marking the magazine’s centenary issue in 2016.
But it was Meghan’s decision to co-edit that appalled certain quarters, with claims her editorial choices indicate a political leaning. British royals are supposed to remain entirely unbiased when it comes to issues of the day.
