The duchess’ birth plan is upsetting her new rellies
The royals have a rule for almost everything, from how to sip tea, to what to wear for dinner, but when it comes to having her baby, the Duchess of Sussex is determined to do things her own way – no matter how much drama it causes.
Due to give birth any day now, Meghan is expected to snub four decades of royal tradition by not having her firstborn in the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London, where the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to her children, reportedly because the former Suits star doesn’t want to copy Kate.
Although Kensington Palace was yet to confirm the news as we went to press, it’s thought Meghan, 37, and her husband Prince Harry, 34, have instead opted for a hospital closer to their new home in Windsor – and unlike her sister-in-law Kate, the new mum won’t make a public appearance with her child until well after his or her arrival.
“This baby is not a direct heir to the throne and they want the birth to be as private as possible,” a palace insider explains. “Meghan is nervous about complications, such as an emergency Caesarean, and doesn’t want the pressure of having to look immaculate on the hospital steps just hours later.”
In an apparent dig at mum-of-three Kate, 37, the insider adds that the duchess doesn’t want to be “primped and blow-dried to within an inch of her life” immediately after the delivery – she’d rather spend that precious time with her newborn.
And veteran royal reporter Omid Scobie agrees that a photo shoot would go against Meghan’s “feminist beliefs”, saying, “The optics of a totally glamorous, picture-perfect moment hours after giving birth are not quite in alignment with her views on the world.”
