It’s a term that every pharmacist will be familiar with, but “bioavailability” is something us regular folk may only read of on product packaging, thinking “what does that mean?”. Well, wonder no more! Professor Harrison “Dr Harry” Weisinger, medical director for Truth Origins, explains what you need to know about this buzzword.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
“Put simply, the term ‘bioavailability’ refers to how much of a given substance reaches the bloodstream after it’s been taken,” Dr Harry says. A substance taken intravenously (injected into a vein) is 100 per cent bioavailable because all of it will reach circulation.
“The bioavailability of substances taken via other routes, say topically, by ingestion or by inhalation, are generally lower,” he adds.
