It was an historic moment that made headlines around the world, our prime minister Jacinda Ardern introducing her precious newborn daughter in a press conference at Auckland City Hospital. But it was all a snooze for gorgeous Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford, who slept peacefully in her mother’s arms throughout her big debut.

“You’ve all had a calming effect,” the radiant PM joked to waiting journalists as she arrived cradling her three-dayold bundle of joy, with proud partner Clarke Gayford by their side. “She’s just finally gone to sleep.”

Woman’s Day was there to congratulate the new “First Family” and also asked a “sleep-deprived but super-well” Jacinda, 37, how she hoped her decision to be a working mum, with Clarke, 40, a stay-at-home dad, would change the world their daughter grows up in.

Beaming, the PM acknowledged her situation was “a novelty” but told us she hopes one day “it’s generally accepted not just that women can make the choice, but also that men can too – Clarke’s being as much of a role model as I am”.
