Put simply, my novel is about life – and death! When Daisy Cooper’s life suddenly ends, she finds herself in the processing centre of the afterlife, which is organised by Death himself. Except he’s not quite the Grim Reaper, but a rather belligerent administrator. Stuck in this new reality, Daisy’s understanding of friendship, hope and love comes alive in new, unexpected ways.
Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, in which Death narrates the story, definitely inspired me to write this book. Then Daisy suddenly popped into my head, strangely with the caveat of ‘I’m about to die and you need to find out what happens next’ – so then, of course, I had to create the story for her.
