Britain has numerous cranefly species, mainly found in grassy or damp habitats, but two of the most abundant are Tipula paludosa and T. oleracea, both of which emerge en masse in September. They are sadly not strong fliers, bumbling around and bumping into the lit windows of buildings and vehicles. Their sole aim during their brief adult existence is to mate, most of their life having been spent in the soil as fat, rootmunching larvae known as leatherjackets.
