With fantastic manoeuvrability and an ability to reach 50kph in short bursts, sparrowhawks are well-adapted to hunting other birds. Usually only small songbirds are taken, but the much larger female sparrowhawk (pictured) will target species up to pigeon size - or jay size, in this instance! There is a common misconception that sparrowhawks can cause a decline in bird populations. However, only the most prevalent birds are preyed on, and even then, usually those that are old, weak or injured.
After a few speedy laps of the wooden pole, this plucky jay managed to flee the sparrowhawk's talons, but it can be a birdeat-bird world out there.
