THE final showjumping track proved relatively soft, perhaps because Santiago Varela decided to row back after an influential challenge in this last barrage in Tokyo.

“It was big, but the distances were all a bit longer and that class of horse can jump bigger,” said Tim Price, who went clear on Falco to finish sixth. “In a way, when a tired horse has that bit more distance they are able to use their bodies and throw the big scopey jumps. They weren’t tested on how they can change that energy to something more precise.”

Laura also mentioned the fact the second round in Tokyo was very late. “The horses thought they should be in bed and it was humid,” she said.

Ros and Lordships Graffalo jumped clear for 21st, having successfully changed a small Neue Schule gag, ridden on the snaffle rein, for a plain snaffle.
