MG GLOSTER'S ESCAPADE FROM THE CITY OF HEARTS TO THE CITY OF TEMPLES

For the past few days, my new gig at Top Gear has had me living in the bustling heart of Mumbai, and my partner in crime has been the Maruti Suzuki Fronx.

is taken up by either the Hector or the Comet. For once, people also consider the Astor. One Gem that gets ignored in this is the Gloster. Being the flagship UK-based brand and a competitor to the Fortuner, the Gloster has high expectations on its shoulders. Can it do justice to them? We tested that in our capital-to-capital expedition from Delhi to Kathmandu. On this journey, the Gloster saw all kinds of terrains and all kinds of roads as well. It had to cruise past the Yamuna Expressway at jaw-dropping speeds and crawl through Lucnkow's tight streets. It had to glide on the tarmac while also handling crater-like potholes. The variant facing this madness was the Blackstorm 7 Seater 4WD, which has a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel guzzler under its bonnet.

Let's start with the beginning; the moment I took the driver's seat, I realised this car was high! It was like I was suddenly on the first floor, looking down the road from above.

IMPRACTICAL YET IRRESISTIBLE

Exactly ten years ago, I took my first international trip. It was to Bahrain, a country of endless desert and skyscrapers, where my aunt and uncle lived. Among their friends and neighbours, one particular gentleman, upon learning I was a budding petrolhead, took an entire day off work to take me around the city’s showrooms to see some “normal” Middle East traffic.
