WHO WOULD HAVE thought Rolls-Royce would have their own version of GTI, RS or Type R? Of course, I am being a smidgeon reductive, but the Black Badge variants echo the cars made by proper performance divisions: a boost in power, chassis tweaks, sportier detailing (including carbon-fibre trim inside), and a more youthful image. It works: the average Black Badge buyer is younger than someone buying a Mini these days.

The Cullinan Black Badge is an imperious machine and one that you just sink into. Its attractions include very fine leather, some wonderfully supportive seats, and the minimizing of anything likely to cause any sort of stress or strain.&nbsp;You do not have to exert yourself or make an effort to close the doors, for instance, beyond pressing a button.
There is only so much the engineers can do to make a 2.7-tonne SUV "dynamic", though. The 29-hp and 50-Nm boost over the regular Cullinan, achieved by modest tweaks to the same 6.75-litre turbocharged V12 petrol engine, is negligible when applied to something that feels as if it has its own gravitational pull. The beefier brakes (with re-designed ventilation for better cooling) could be beefier still, if you are going to make use of that extra grunt.&nbsp;Even with Black Badge tuning of the throttle response, brake pedal action, and rear-wheel steering, it is still an immensely heavy SUV.

But like any Cullinan, the Black Badge is a lesson in ultimate refinement that even the latest Range Rover can only dream of. The V12, for example, is nearsilent on the move (unless you poke it, prompting a tuneful tenor note from the Black Badge-specific exhaust) and the rolling ride comfort is almost unparalleled.&nbsp;Almost, the air suspension and big wheels do struggle to eliminate all low-speed bumps and if you throw it into a corner at an awkward angle, it will briefly jiggle like a recently sat on water bed.

If you are wealthy enough to have your own driver (we are pretty sure you would be, at this price), then the rear is one hell of a luxurious place in which to spend your time. Massaging armchairs, a digital television tuner, and your own champagne fridge ready for when you need to toast your latest successful business deal... it is utterly gorgeous and infinitely customizable; Rolls say no two of their&nbsp;cars are the same. Specify the "event" seating and you even have your own inbuilt pair of chairs that pop out of the tailgate so you can get a prime spot at a polo tournament.

Therein lies the crux. Black Badge or not, the Cullinan remains the ultimate do-anything Rolls-Royce. Quick enough for keeping up with sports cars on most&nbsp;journeys, plush enough to be used as an exclusive limousine for that glitzy awards do, and capable of tackling the rougher terrain some hobbies demand and being completely unfazed while doing it all in style.

The Black Badge Cullinan's upgrades make it a little more fidgety on the road and it is no quicker on paper t than a regular one. But if you have the budget and you are comfortable with spending it on a big and heavy SUV, then it makes sense to go that little bit further and get the most special version.&nbsp;
