THE AUTOMOBILE CLASS OF THE 2023 DAKAR Rally was won by Nasser Al-Attiyah and his co-driver, Mathieu Baumel, who once again triumphed in a Toyota Hilux. It marks the team&rsquo;s fifth victory, the Toyota Hilux Dakar&rsquo;s third, and all three have triumphed twice in a row.
The Frenchman, Sebastien Loeb, who finished second last year as well, trailed the 52-year-old Nasser al-Attiyah by more than an hour in the overall standings after the 52-year-old won three stages. Lucas Moraes of Brazil, a colleague of Al-at Attiyah&rsquo;s Toyota team, came in third. With a dominating lead after the first week and a safety-first approach in the second half of the race, Al-Attiyah claimed the overall lead following the third stage.

As he set a record by winning six straight stages in the second week for the Bahrain Raid Xtreme squad, Loeb gave it everything he had. However, the 48-year-old Frenchman had lost so much time in the opening leg of the race that it was hopeless.
Al-Attiyah was in charge of this year&rsquo;s Dakar Rally for more than a week, gaining advantage from both his own pace and the early departure of a majority of other competitors. Although Sebastian Loeb&rsquo;s lead was insurmountable, he made a statement by winning six straight stages in the second week. In the final&nbsp;classification, that was enough for Loeb, co-driver Fabian Lurquin, and their Prodrive vehicle to move up to the second place, but Al-Attiyah still won the rally by more than an hour and 20 minutes. Loeb, a nine-time world rally champion, has been placed second three times in a row in the Dakar Rally. Another Toyota, driven by Lucas Moraes and Timo Gottschalk, finished third.

The Frenchman, Stephane Peterhansel, holds the record for the most victories in the automobile category with eight, while the Qatari Nasser al-Attiyah, who took the lead from stage three when opponents encountered difficulties, is now second.
Interestingly, the top-finishing vehicle from Audi's well known Dakar programme came in barely 14th, more than six hours behind the rally leader. The ambitious Audi programme encountered substantial reliability problems, collisions, and other concerns on the road for the second year in succession.

A dominant force in the rally in the early 2010s, top-ranked X-Raid Mini came in ninth.
The World Rally Raid Championship now includes the Dakar Rally. This was first done last year. That title match continues in Abu Dhabi the next month. The current winners, Al-Attiyah and Baumel, are in an excellent position to retain their title this year thanks to their victory in Dakar.
