FERRARI'S CARLOS SAINZ delivered on the potential he showed throughout the weekend after taking pole position during qualifying in&nbsp;Singapore. Mercedes' George Russell took P2, followed by Charles Leclerc in P3, McLaren's Lando Norris took P4, and Lewis Hamilton was in P5.
Charles Leclerc opted to start the race on softs. This allowed his Ferrari to jump ahead of Russell for second place, ensuring a Ferrari one-two during the opening laps of the race. Sainz controlled the pace of the race while Leclerc was asked by Ferrari to back up the rest of the field in order to give his Spanish teammate a five-second lead. Leclerc stayed within a second of Sainz for 10 laps or so and then dropped down by a few seconds. However, he helped Sainz in a good way when the safety car was deployed. He backed off on that lap, holding up cars behind him. This allowed Sainz to gain a significant nine-second lead over the rest by the time he led the field into the pits at the end of the lap.

After the restart, it was clear that the Ferrari driver was slowing his pace to prevent Mercedes from making another pit-stop. However, when Alpine's Esteban Ocon, who was sixth at the time, stopped on track with an apparent gearbox issue, Mercedes capitalised on the virtual safety car situation to stop their drivers for fresh medium tyres. This helped them charge back up to Sainz and Norris, getting past Leclerc in the process.
Russell re-joined in fourth place, just over 15 seconds behind Leclerc, with Hamilton in fifth close behind him.&nbsp;Russell caught up with and passed Leclerc on lap 54 and then set off after Norris and Sainz up front, with Hamilton now right behind him and apparently even faster. With five laps to go, the top four were nose to tail and Sainz deliberately slowed to give Norris the benefit of the DRS and make it harder for the Mercedes to catch him. However, Russell's podium hopes ended in the barrier at Turn 10 during the last lap.

Leclerc managed to hold off the fast-charging Max Verstappen for fourth, while Sainz led Norris and Hamilton across the line in what was a dramatic climax to an intriguing Grand Prix that ran close to two hours with a safety car, a virtual safety car, some very intense close racing through the field, and a dramatic end to Red Bull's winning streak.&nbsp;
