A big off-roader gets a total overhaul-boxy is back!

2024 Lexus GX

The Lexus GX has a well-earned reputation for rugged reliability, performance on the trail, and luxurious appointments. It’s also been roughly the same for a long time. The second-generation GX was introduced way back in 2010 as a body-on-frame luxury off-road SUV that shared a platform with the international-market Toyota Prado. Although Lexus has lightly updated the GX multiple times since, it eventually couldn’t mask the SUV’s age, even as it added a large infotainment touchscreen for 2022.

Its growth spurt is finally here. Lexus overhauled the styling, underpinnings, and technology of the new GX in an effort to help it better take on today’s luxury SUV market. Its highlight feature is a boxy body style reminiscent of old-school SUVs from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Yet its tech-forward LED lighting signatures help lend it a distinctly modern appeal, and numerous other changes breathe new life into what’s become a staple of the Lexus lineup.

Unlike most of today’s luxury SUVs, the GX remains a body-on-frame, off-roadcapable vehicle. Within the Lexus lineup, it sits between the new three-row TX and recently redesigned full-size LX. It’s built using Lexus’ GA-F platform, which it shares with the LX, and as a result, the new model is longer, wider, and taller than before. For the first time ever, the GX comes equipped with electronic power steering, a departure from the hydraulic power steering it’s had since it first arrived for the 2003 model year.

2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty

The heavy-duty truck world moves more slowly than other pickup classes, and progress comes in spurts. Take the Ford F-Series Super Duty, whose recent refresh included softer-edged styling, a new entry-level gas-fed V-8, a new high-output 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8, and myriad small improvements like new bedside steps. Is it still basically the same truck as before? Absolutely, but it’s also a better Super Duty, however incrementally.

YOUR ICON OF ICONS: CHEVROLET CORVETTE

Was there ever any doubt? MotorTrend readers are largely American, and as much as we love Jeeps, Mustangs, and F-150s in this country, the Corvette has been “America’s sports car” for nearly as long as this publication has existed. That’s why you chose it via our online vote as the most iconic car of the past 75 years.
