<p>Cars capable of jumping over obstacles have cropped up in popular media from time to time, such as the Mach 5 from Speed Racer cartoon and KITT from Knight Rider TV series, but there has been a lot of real-world research in this technology as well. Back in the 80s, Bose Audio unveiled a heavily-modified Lexus LS400 fitted with what they called Project Sound a completely active suspension system. Founder Amar Bose took inspiration from his own active noise-cancelling technology. There were sensors placed on the car that could detect upcoming road surface changes and corners and would react within five milliseconds to counteract the upcoming force. In order to achieve this, Bose beefed up electromagnetic drivers from its audio equipment to create what was called a Linear Electromagnetic Motor a combination of magnets, motors, and controllers. Though capable of jumping over obstacles, the system did not see commercial success because of its high cost and weight. This brings us to a car video that recently surfaced on the web - BYD Yangwang U9 supercar, which is capable of driving with a level body on three wheels, dance, and C - jump in the air. The U9 utilises DiSus-X. BYD DiSus Intelligent Body Control System will be introduced in a simplified version soon on production vehicles - DiSus-P (a hydraulic system) on the Yangwang U8 and DiSus-A (an air-suspension system) on DENZA N7. BYD says existing cars will receive DiSus-C (only the damping control system) through OTA updates. The DiSus-X seen on the U9 combines elements of all three other DiSus systems, thus creating an active hydropneumatic suspension. Hydropneumatic suspensions combine compressible inert gases and incompressible hydraulic fluids and these are connected by a series of lines for self-levelling. A hydropneumatic suspension also incorporates a system to hold a steady pressure, usually an electrical or mechanical pump. The technology is not particularly new, as Citro&euml;n invented it back in the 60s, but this is probably the first time a hydropneumatic suspension has been combined with active suspension technology, creating a whole new level of body control. Unfortunately, BYD is awfully quiet about production plans for the DiSus-X equipped U9, which means a jumping car may be out of reach for enthusiasts for a little while longer.&nbsp;</p>
