Ford&rsquo;s famous EcoBoost engine made its debut back in 2012, and it was advertised as having a footprint as small as an A4 paper (not with ancillaries, just the short block), which is impressive even to this day. It also won the International Engine of the Year award in 2013 for the sub-1.0 litre category. Now, more than a decade later, in its latest iteration, onboard the Ford Puma ST Powershift, the very same EcoBoost 1.0-litre delivers a ridiculous output of 170PS and 248Nm. In the UK-spec Puma ST Powershift, this pocket monster of an engine is paired with a seven-speed DCT, and Ford claims it is good for a 0-100kmph sprint in 7.4 seconds. It's not as fast as 1.6-2.0-litre turbopetrol hot hatches such as the Honda Civic Type R, the Volkswagen Golf GTi, the Toyota GR Yaris/GR Corolla or the Renault Megane RS, but you need to remember that the engine capacity is about as much as your average superbike. The Puma ST Powershift also gets a mild-hybrid system with an integrated 48-volt starter-generator that helps cut down turbo lag, adding 10 extra ponies in certain scenarios. There are cars with higher specific output than the humble Ford Puma EcoBoost from BMW, Ferrari, Mclaren and Mercedes-AMG, and perhaps not surprisingly, Ford itself, with the GT supercar.

Rise of the 1.0-litre turbo three-cylinders 
You may remember, the Indian EcoSport with the EcoBoost engine came out in 2013, packing 120PS and 170Nm. Ford found more takers for the diesel and the naturally-aspirated petrol variants than the EcoBoost, as this variant was significantly more expensive than its counterparts. However, Ford was simply ahead of the curve, as within the last few years we had a slew of 1.0-litre threecylinder turbo-petrols flood the market. The current crop contains a bunch of&nbsp;Volkswagens and &Scaron;kodas with a 1.0-litre TSI pumping out 115PS, the Renault-Nissan 1.0-litre turbo matching the Maruti Suzuki Boosterjet with 100PS, and finally the 1.0-litre Turbo Gdi from Hyundai which matches the EcoSport of a decade ago with a power output of 120PS.

Tighter emission norms have pushed most manufacturers towards forced induction, and the meteoric rise of the 1.0-litre turbo three-cylinder is simply a result of that. That being said, we can&rsquo;t help but be impressed that Ford was able to predict the Indian as well as the global trend a decade ago, and pushed out way more power than one needed out of an A4-paper sized engine. In light of Ford having exited India, we can&rsquo;t help but feel robbed of sorts, as in the current market, the 1.0-litre and larger capacity EcoBoost engines would have made Ford the default choice, not just for us enthusiasts but for the average Joe as well.
