Considering in particular the final-series VL, this was a car well past its replacement date, unable to meet new emission regulations and so mired in controversy that journalists who dared breathe the word ‘Nissan’ in the context of Holden’s next engine choice were forced into silence by court injunctions.

The winds did eventually shift and in fact moved so far that the only Holden ever equipped with that unpatriotic RB30 engine is now regarded as the best Commodore of its era.
