SUP VASSILIKI
SUP International|Issue 44 - Mid Summer 2024
Vassiliki is renowned throughout the windsurfing world as a high wind spot, so it's perhaps not the first place that would spring to mind as a great SUP destination, however, think again...

SUP VASSILIKI

Greek Island

Life Vassiliki is a traditional fishing village, located on the southernmost tip of the beautiful Greek island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea. It has managed to retain its unspoilt charm with chilled tavernas, cafes and bars lining the picturesque harbour. Due to an extraordinary local wind phenomenon, known as ‘Eric’, Vassiliki has long been a world-famous windsurfing destination for all levels. It offers a gentle morning onshore breeze, which generally switches to a howling afternoon cross-shore, fuelling the addiction of windsurf and winging fanatics alike from around the globe.

However, it’s not just a great windsurfing spot as Vassiliki Bay is an asymmetric horseshoe shape, and as such is well protected; before the morning sea breeze even begins, this creates near perfect SUP conditions. The glassy flat water has the added benefit of being beautifully warm and azure blue, making it ideal for an early morning SUP before the wind gets up later in the day.

Club Vass Does Stand Up

Club Vass is probably the biggest privately owned windsurf centre in the world, established way back in 1987. Ever at the leading edge of developments in watersports, the centre introduced SUPs to their extensive repertoire of toys at the onset of the sport. SUPs are offered to their highly active clientele as a light wind alternative, alongside their core activity of windsurfing, and more recently, winging. Club Vass currently have a fleet of Fanatic SUPs which are free to use for guests on the Club Vass package, otherwise there’s a small charge. They also offer various group options, including SUP safaris, SUP fitness and SUP Yoga. SUPs are also great for kids who are starting to find their feet on a board and feature highly in their Kids Club program - especially on the much loved Mega SUP.

Paddle Science #18 - The Body Fortress. Boosting Immunity

At this time of year, the rate of infection for colds and flu normally tends to slow down as we enter warmer, springtime months. However, if you’ve been anywhere at all in the world recently, then there’s one word you can’t escape at the moment: Coronavirus. Infection rates, mortality rates and prognostic data are changing daily at the moment. As a new virus none of us have previously been exposed to it, meaning that currently, we have no immunity to it. It’s only through being infected by a virus that our bodies are able to make the right antibodies to not only enable us to recover but to also help protect us from any recurrent and future infection from it. If you’re keen to stay well and keep getting out on your SUP board this spring, then focussing on boosting your immune system is a positive step to take.

We were on the outskirts of Helsinki, scouting a new destination for our sup camps. Just 45 minutes’ drive from the city, the untouched nature of the Nuuksio National Park stretched out before us. Mirror-smooth lakes, wild herbs and an impressive fauna waiting to be explored over on board or on foot via the many desire lines made by the land mammals.
