The yacht sank in the early hours of the morning on Monday 19 August in a sudden storm, while at anchor off Porticello, south-east of Palermo on the Italian island's north coast.
Twenty-two people were on board at the time: 10 crew members and 12 guests. Fifteen were rescued immediately following the sinking, including a one-year-old child and their parents. Emergency services recovered the body of the yacht's chef, Canadian Recaldo Thomas, soon after. A complex search and rescue operation was launched in order to find the six remaining passengers: the Bayesian's owner, tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch; his 18-year-old daughter Hannah; and friends and colleagues of Lynch's who were guests on board: lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International bank, and his wife Judy, a charity trustee. Over the following four days their bodies were recovered by specialist dive teams from the yacht which was resting in 160ft of water.
