I truly believe mankind could not have survived without the existence of art and cultural nuances that vary from community to community across the world. When I ponder about why I love travelling across Europe so much I am reminded of how fundamental these two elements are in anchoring society. Apart from art and culture, there is a rising wave in indulging in shopping sprees on holiday to make oneself feel good. The gleaming shine of materialism and capitalism is a heady concoction that cannot be ignored. So, when I think of an idyllic holiday I would say the getaway needs to consist of these three elements- retail, art and culture.
The second largest city in the Bavarian dialect area, after the Austrian capital of Vienna, Munich is one of the predominant hubs of art, culture and retail globally. As per the Mercer survey in 2021, Munich's standard of living was recognised as the highest in Germany - and the third highest in the world! It was also rated as the world's most liveable city according to a Monocle's Quality of Life Survey in 2021. The Bavarian capital is home to some of the finest architecture in the world as the city is filled with centuries-old buildings and numerous museums paying homage to the artistic and cultural roots of the city.
Apart from being a haven for art and culture fanatics, the city has some of the finest retail outlets and markets in Europe. I have curated a list of hot spots for art, culture and retail that I deem as a must-visit!
