A while ago I watched a conversation between US Senator Bernie Sanders and Ambassador Mikko Hautala. The Senator asks why Finland is the happiest society on Earth. The Ambassador said, “I think that we have seen is that there’s high degree of trust in the institutions and in other people”. Our biggest challenge to progress, nation-building efforts, and to addressing the injustices of our past, is that we have lost all trust in institutions to lead. We’ve broken the trust amongst each other not to betray the promise of our democracy.
