The Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action (SNEHA), a Mumbai-based NGO, launched an awareness campaign named 'Jung Against Junk' during Ganeshotsav. It conducted awareness drives by partnering with various Ganeshostav mandals (Ganesh festival organizing committees) in Mumbai.The campaign focused on the importance of a nutritious diet and ill-effects of junk food among adolescents. SNEHA reached about 7,500 families from Mumbai and Thane during the Ganesh festival by partnering with 12+ Ganeshotsav mandals and a few schools. SNEHA also held street plays to present nutrition facts in the vicinity for the visiting devotees.Dr Rama Shyam, Program Director, SNEHA, said, “Our recent study found that 59 percent of adolescents had inadequate dietary diversity. While consumption of food grains and pulses was high, that of leafy green vegetables was low. This festival is an opportune time for us to reach out to the community and highlight the importance of a healthy diet. Through our partnership with the Ganesh mandals, public-primary health posts for iron and folic acid supplementation, coupled with health and nutrition education and our on-ground activities with parents and community stakeholders, we are confident to reach several community members of different age groups."
