There was a time when Marwari girls were groomed to be good wives, mothers and homemakers, in keeping with the timehonoured traditions. As marriage came early, pursuing academics beyond school or college was not de rigueur. Mamta Binani belonged to this era. Born and raised in Kolkata, a city known for its educational and cultural leanings, coming of age, she found herself precariously caught between academics and homemaking. Thanks to her ever-supportive spouse, Sumit Binani, and her parents, not to mention her strong will, extraordinary calibre and never-say-die spirit, she has been able to balance both the worlds. Today, she stands out as an epitome of indomitable and persevering womanhood, having accomplished success and won admiration and honour in the bargain, in no small measure.
Ahead of the pack
Self-made and driven, Mamta Binani's impressive accomplishments dot her trailblazing career, which traces its genesis to her academic brilliance. In 1996, she was named All-India Topper (amongst lady candidates) in the Intermediate Examinations of The Institute of Company Secretaries of India and All-India 14th amongst all candidates. Subsequently, in the final exams too, she performed brilliantly, scoring the highest marks on an all-India basis in the Company Law paper. [To those uninitiated, The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is a statutory body, constituted under the Company Secretaries Act, 1980 (Act No 56 of 1980).
