What makes computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies pivotal in modern manufacturing?
The answer is simple, yet impactful: They enable the design and manufacturing of complex parts and systems with precision and efficiency.
But what one is to see is how these technologies have evolved from basic 2D design and machining CAM capabilities to sophisticated systems that integrate with digital manufacturing processes.
For Suman Nelluri, CEO, Greaves Technologies, "CAD and CAM revolutionised the industry, enabling the creation of 2D and 3D models, optimising production processes, and enhancing design for manufacturability and assembly. Standard operating procedures further automated aspects of 3D model creation over time."
Naren Brahme, Vice President-ER&D, Tata Technologies, notes, "Advancements like AI and machine learning (ML) have enhanced CAD/ CAM capabilities, reflecting a shift towards automation, improved accuracy, and the handling of complex geometries, significantly boosting productivity and innovation in manufacturing." Furthermore, CAD/CAM is continuously evolving to incorporate emerging technologies such as digital twins, virtual commissioning, IoT, 3D printing, Al-based generative design, cloud-based solutions, and simulation analysis.
Machine Learning integration
ML is increasingly being integrated into CAD/ CAM systems to improve design accuracy, efficiency, and innovation.
"This integration allows for advanced features like predictive design, automatic correction of design flaws, and optimisation of manufacturing processes like tool correction and part defect detection," says Brahme. "ML transforms areas such as generative design, where algorithms can propose optimised designs based on specific criteria and constraints."
