In the hot early hours of Aug. 14, 1958, a phone rang in the halls of Graceland. "I knew what it was before I answered," Elvis Presley said later. His beloved mother, Gladys, had died in the hospital of liver disease. "Elvis was inconsolable," reported Last Train to Memphis author Peter Guralnick, "touching the body over and over, until hospital attendants had to ask him to stop." The next day, reporters converged on his Memphis mansion and found Elvis, 23, and his father, Vernon, crying on the front steps. "She's all we lived for," Elvis said. "She was always my best girl."
