Today, fashion is more dynamic than ever, and its ever-evolving nature is evident in its seamless integration with the wedding industry. A pivotal element of this harmonious union is bridal couture, swiftly recognised and embraced by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) through an event, now in its second edition. Titled FDCI-Manifest Wedding Weekend this year, it is poised to reach new heights under the guidance of chairperson Sunil Sethi. He smiles as he shares, “Our collaboration with Manifest is befitting because it is a luxury, wedding and couture property that’s a part of RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group. But it is the trust I have in the Manifest team that gives me confidence.”

Reflecting on his 15-year tenure in the fashion industry, which includes orchestrating thousands of fashion shows, navigating the FDCI’s challenges and triumphs, and partnering with various stakeholders, Sunil remains humble. “It feels like yesterday when I joined FDCI,” he reminisces. “Being involved in an organisation from its very beginning creates a strong sense of connection… When I joined them, the fashion industry had many factions. A significant number of established designers had left the existing association to form a new one. In that sense, it felt like we were rebuilding the FDCI. Fortunately, it only took about a year for the organisation to regain its footing. But today, it transcends any individual, myself included.”

THE BEGINNING OF AN ERA

It is safe to say that Sunil has been the horse that stays the course and brings the trophy home once past the post.

His journey began in 1988 with the founding of Alliance Merchandising Company, a sourcing and buying firm. His career, spanning product development and buying for prestigious clients like Armani Casa and Anthropologie, championed Indian fashion globally before ‘Made in India’ became the official adage.
