Scientists at England's Cambridge University devised the system, which uses an over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump. The two tools are linked to CamAPS HX, an algorithm-powered smartphone app developed by the researchers, which mimics a healthy human pancreas by calculating and releasing appropriate amounts of blood sugar- controlling insulin.

Unlike earlier versions of a similar app, CamAPS HX is entirely automatic and does not require input from the patient.
