AN INNOVATIVE bionic pancreas has been approved by the FDA for type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients aged six and older, and the life-changing system eliminates the need for manual injections of insulin multiple times a day, experts say.

Dubbed iLet, the automated product combines an infusion pump with algorithm-controlled software, which decides how much blood sugar– regulating insulin to deliver based on input from a separate continuous glucose monitor — a Bluetooth-enabled sensor placed on an individual’s body.

Unlike other artificial pancreas systems, iLet needs little input and only requires a user to enter their weight to get started.
