Damning evidence from a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel reveals phenylephrine — a key compound in many of the most popular cold and allergy medications — is as useful as a placebo when taken by mouth!

Now, manufacturers may soon be forced to reformulate products — or pull them from store shelves!

“We don’t believe oral phenylephrine is effective as a nasal decongestant,” says the FDA’s Dr. Peter Starke, who led the review.
