Aussie influencer and mum Helen Chik on navigating life with her head held high

CONFIDENCE IS KEY

Helen Chik says she grew up trusting the conventional beliefs of “how to succeed in life”. These beliefs, of course, include getting a degree (in Chik’s case, two), landing an office job, marrying the ideal man and having a child with him.

While Chik did tick all of these boxes, after her first marriage broke down, she knew her criteria for success was different to the one she had been following.

Though there’s no handbook on how to change your career, navigate two divorces, and re-enter the dating world as a single mother, the author of Sex, Swipes & Other Stories tells WHO just how she did it…

ON CHANGING CAREERS

Q. What kind of thoughts did you have when you left a “stable” job to explore something more creative?

A. I think I had more drive to make this new path a success because I didn’t want to have to go back. It was a new world to insert myself into with little to no experience, but I felt this inherent need to learn and be responsible for my growth and development.

Q. How did you find the confidence to establish yourself as a content creator?

A. I think it’s something you build over time. I don’t think anyone starts this career with a full cup of confidence because it’s almost always a trial-and-error process to find your feet. What works for others may not work for you, and it takes time to figure out exactly what you enjoy creating.
