Work, eat, sleep and repeat – it can sometimes feel like that’s all we ever do. However it’s those little in-between moments that provide the space we need to regroup. We asked four powerhouse women at the top of their game how they make the most of their downtime.
CREATE A BEDTIME PREP ROUTINE
DR CLARE BAILEY, GP and co-founder of The Fast 800 online programme
If you struggle to switch off and fall asleep at night, Bailey says it could be a sign you need to fine-tune your sleep hygiene.
“My first piece of advice is to create a consistent routine before bed as it can help signal to your body that it’s time to wind-down,” she explains.
Set yourself a consistent bedtime, and try to limit caffeine and alcohol during the last few hours before you hit the hay.
“Another non-negotiable is to keep your screens (TVs, laptops and mobiles) out of hand’s reach late in the day,” Bailey advises.
“Stop scrolling a few hours before you go to sleep and try reading a book or magazine instead. And definitely no TVs in the bedroom – your bed should be for sleep and sex only!”
Last but not least, aim to avoid eating three hours before bed.
“Eating alerts the gut to start working, which in turn raises your body temperature, making it difficult to fall asleep,” she says.
