Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are in damage control, after the pair wrote character letters on behalf of actor Danny Masterson before he was sentenced for raping two women on September 7. In a video posted on Instagram, the celebrity couple, who starred alongside Masterson in hit sitcom That ’70s Show, shared that they were “aware of the pain” they had caused by writing the letters – which were made public shortly after Masterson, 47, was given a 30-year prison sentence.

“A couple months ago, Danny’s family reached out to us and they asked us to write character letters to represent the person that we knew for 25 years so that the judge could take that into full consideration relative to the sentencing,” Kutcher, 45, shared in the video.

Kunis, 40, went on to note that the letters “were not written to question the legitimacy of the judicial system or the validity of the jury’s ruling” but, Kutcher added, were instead “intended for the judge to read” and “not to undermine the testimonies of the victims or re-traumatise them in any way”.

“We would never want to do that, and we are sorry if that has taken place,” he emphasised.
