For the first time in four days after his arrival at a seedy motel-turned halfway house in Denver, Gary Oliva stepped out of Room 12 on Feb. 27, pulling the hood of his sweatshirt tight around his face. “He was obviously desperate not to be recognized and looked really shifty,” a neighbor says of the convicted pedophile, who was released from prison on Jan. 31 after serving less than eight years of a 10-year sentence for child porn. “He kept checking to make sure no one was watching him.”
But they definitely were: Oliva has allegedly confessed to the brutal 1996 murder of 6-year-old pageant princess JonBenét Ramsey — leading many to believe that a killer has now been set free. “Word quickly got out that he was staying there. People are not so keen on monsters who prey on children,” says the neighbor. “He must know he has to tread very carefully.”
