THE ART OF FASHION

Ask any fashion lover and they'll tell you: there's a simple way to trigger anyone who loves the world of fabric - simply claim that fashion isn't an actual form of art in the way that painting, music or sculpture is, but just something you use to cover your body and nothing more.

That's something that really grinds the gears of fashionistas the world over, and yet it seems that this opinion is the ruling sentiment. It drowns out the cries of the many lovers of couture who follow their favourite brands with the same kind of devotion as most people follow their favourite sports teams or pop stars.

If you're one of the affected in this ever-burning argument, today we're arming you with solid proof of what you've always believed: that fashion is an art form just as valid as any other!

How? By pointing out the many times that the world of fashion has easily, fluidly and aptly melded with various other creative domains to create new, innovative and memorable works of art. Work that managed to push the boundaries of the medium - and ensure that a new legion of fans came to understand the undeniable power of the thread.

DIOR X HAJIME SORAYAMA

Perhaps one of the most exciting fashion x visual art collaborations in recent history came in 2019, when Dior announced that, for its menswear collection, it would be working with Japanese cult-favourite illustrator Hajime Sorayama. The hyper-realist cyberpunk artist is renowned for creating astonishingly detailed erotic visualisations of female robots and sketches of prehistoric species.
