KEEPING THE SCORE

Background music, is perhaps one of the most underrated aspect of movie-making. It is one of crafts that can alleviate or deteriorate crucial moments of cinema. Composer Karan Gour, has done some notable work in films such as 'Titli' (2014), NH-10' (2015), 'Haramkhor'theme music (2015) and Phobia' (2016). With his eclectic soundscape, Karan has his own brand of music. What makes him score over others is that besides his musical flair, Karan Gour is also a qualified sound engineer and his understanding of audio mixing and recording has come in handy for his work. Speaking exclusively to Digital Studio the composer discloses a few tips and tricks.

How did you take up being a background music composer?

I've always been interested in both films and music, and the ideal scenario would be if I could bring the two together. Unfortunately, nobody was handing out background scores to a 20-year-old. So, I decided to make a feature film (Kshay) and score it as well. Fortunately, the film got to the right places and I soon had a handful of films I was scoring for like 'Titli', 'NH10', 'Phobia', and some others.

You also are a sound engineer, besides being a composer, surely it gives you an edge. What do you think being a sound engineer helps while scoring?
