തൊടുപുഴയിലെ വഴിത്തലയിലാണ് എന്റെ നാട്. മൂന്നാം ക്ലാസിൽ പഠിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് ആദ്യമായി കായികമേളയിൽ ഒന്നാം സ്ഥാനം നേടിയത്. അന്ന് സബ് ജില്ലാ തലത്തിലും ജില്ലാതലത്തിലും മത്സരി ച്ചു. ആറാം ക്ലാസിൽ പഠിക്കുമ്പോൾ എന്റെ പപ്പയ്ക്ക് കട്ടപ്പന പൊലീസ് സ്റ്റേഷനിലേക്കു സ്ഥലംമാറ്റം കിട്ടി ഞങ്ങൾ അങ്ങോട്ടേക്ക് താമസം മാറി. അവിടെ പൊലീസ് കോട്ടേഴ്സിലായിരുന്നു താമസം. സെന്റ് ജോർജ് സ്കൂളിൽ ഏഴാം ക്ലാസിൽ പഠിക്കുമ്പോൾ സംസ്ഥാന തലത്തിൽ വിജയിച്ചു, പിന്നീട് ദേശീയ തലത്തിൽ സിലക്ഷൻ കിട്ടി. ആദ്യമായി പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിച്ചതും മത്സരങ്ങളിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ കൊണ്ടുപോയതും സ്കൂളിലെ ഫിസിക്കൽ എജ്യുക്കേഷൻ അധ്യാപകരാണ്. പിന്നീടുള്ള മത്സരങ്ങൾക്കെല്ലാം കൊണ്ടുപോയത് എന്റെ പിതാവ് ഏബ്രഹാം ആയിരുന്നു. തൃശൂരിൽ വച്ചുനടന്ന സ്റ്റേറ്റ് ഗയിംസിൽ ഞാൻ ഓടുന്നത് കാണാൻ പപ്പയും വന്നു. യാതൊരു പരിശീലനവും ഇല്ലാതെ ദേശീയതലത്തിൽ വരെ എത്തിയപ്പോൾ പപ്പയ്ക്ക് മനസ്സിലായി ഈ മേഖലയിൽ എനിക്കു കഴിവുണ്ടെന്ന്. അങ്ങനെ ഏഴാംക്ലാസ് കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ എന്നെ കോട്ടയത്തെ മെഡിക്കൽ കോളജ് സ്കൂളിൽ സ്പോർട്സ് ഡിവിഷനിൽ ചേർത്തു. അവിടെയാണെങ്കിൽ രാവിലെയും വൈകുന്നേരവും പരിശീലനം ലഭിക്കും. സർക്കാർ വകയായിരുന്നു താമസവും ഭക്ഷണവും. എട്ട്, ഒൻപത് ക്ലാസുകൾ അവിടെ പഠിച്ചു. ആ സമയത്ത് സംസ്ഥാന, ദേശീയതലങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാം സ്ഥാനക്കാരിയായി. സ്കൂളിലെ പി.ജെ. ദേവസ്യ സാറായിരുന്നു അവിടെ എന്റെ കോച്ച്.

&nbsp;ജി.വി. രാജയിലെ കോച്ച് ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ സാറായിരുന്നു. അവിടെ പഠിക്കുന്ന കാലം മുതൽ വിവിധ മത്സരങ്ങളിൽ ഇന്ത്യയെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിച്ചു പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ എനിക്കു സാധിച്ചു.1981ൽ കൊറിയയിൽ വച്ചു നടന്ന വേൾഡ് ജൂനിയർ മീറ്റിൽ പി.ടി. ഉഷ യും ഞാനും പങ്കെടുത്തു. അന്ന് ഉഷയ്ക്കും എം.ഡി. വത്സമ്മയ്ക്കും കോച്ചുമാരുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എനിക്ക് സ്പെഷൽ കോച്ച് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. ക്യാംപിൽ ആരാണോ കോച്ച്, അവർക്കൊപ്പം പരിശീലനം നടത്തി. എന്നെക്കൂടാതെ അങ്ങനെ വേറെയും കുട്ടികൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
ജി.വി രാജയിൽ പഠിക്കുമ്പോഴും കൂടുതൽ സമയവും ഞാൻ പട്യാലയിൽ ഏഷ്യൻ ഗെയിംസിന്റെ ക്യാംപിൽ ആയിരുന്നു. അന്ന് ക്യാംപിൽ ഒരുപാട് മലയാളികൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവിടെ വച്ചാണ് വിൽസണെ പരിചയപ്പെട്ടത്.
പിന്നീട് പ്രീഡിഗ്രിക്ക് പാലാ അൽഫോൺസ കോളജിൽ ചേർന്നു. അവിടെ മനിയാ നിസാറായിരുന്നു കോച്ച്. 1982ലെ ഏഷ്യൻ ഗെയിംസും കഴിഞ്ഞാണ് ഞാൻ പാലായിലെത്തിയത്. കോളജ് അധികൃതരുടെ ഭാഗത്തുനിന്ന് എല്ലാ പിന്തുണയും സഹായവും ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഒളിംപിക്സിൽ സെമിഫൈനലിലെത്തിയ ആദ്യ ഇന്ത്യൻ വനിതാ താരമായതിനു പിന്നിൽ ഒട്ടേറെ പേരുടെ സഹായവും പ്രാർഥനയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
