Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist made history—and proved that love has no age limit—when they got engaged at the end of the inaugural season of The Golden Bachelor on Nov. 30. Retired restaurateur Gerry, 72, embarked on a search for a special someone after his wife and high school sweetheart, Toni, died in 2017; similarly, securities professional Theresa, 70, went on the show following the death of her husband of 42 years, Billy, in 2014. Now the couple, both parents of two, can’t stop beaming at each other as they share their excitement about what’s next: cementing their bond in front of the world during a live wedding special airing Jan. 4 on ABC and spending their rest of their lives together. Says Theresa: “The best is yet to come.”
When did you first start to feel that spark?
THERESA NIST Getting out of that limo [on the first day of filming]. I stood next to him, and I went, “Oh my God, I’m so attracted to this man.” I got butterflies immediately.
GERRY TURNER She got my attention when we were in the Corvette on our one-on-one date. The headlights were failing, and I was really nervous. She put her hand on my shoulder, and I could physically feel the tension drain out of me. And it’s like, “Okay, now I know that I need to really pay close attention to this person.”
What qualities drew you to each other?
THERESA There’s a ton. He is so positive and outgoing and dynamic and has ambition and drive. And he is extremely intelligent. He wants to have a really great life. He’s excited about every single moment of his life, and I am too.
