The Autumn Leaves
Storizen|Nov 2024
The chill of November morning wrapped around Aamir's shoulders as he walked through the streets of Srinagar, his hometown. The vibrant hues of autumn foliage - blazing reds, burnished coppers, and golden yellows - seemed to mock him, reminding him of the childhood warmth he'd lost since he had moved to the hustle and bustle of big city life.

The Autumn Leaves

Aamir had returned to his childhood home after a long span, seeking solace from his busy life in these familiar landscapes.

As he walked along the Jhelum River, the soft rustle of leaves under his feet echoed through the stillness. His thoughts drifted back to his childhood, filled with joy, laughter, and afternoons spent playing cricket in the backyard gardens. He passed the old wooden bridge, where he once confided in his best friend, Tahir, about his first love. At just 10 years old, he fell for a neighborhood girl six years older than him.

A nostalgic smile washed over his face as he remembered the scolding he received from his mother when Tahir disclosed his secret to her. He didn't speak to him for one whole day, but by the next morning, they were inseparable again. He sighed deeply and wondered how many years had passed since they spoke last. The passage of time and their busy schedules had dusted their friendship.

The scent of roasting chestnuts wafted from a street vendor, transporting Aamir back to winter evenings spent huddled around a Kangri warmth, listening to his grandfather's stories. But even those warm memories were marred as he was no more.

He sighed deeply, sadly, looking up at the sky." I miss you, Dadu (grandfather)!"

As Aamir turned a corner heading for his guesthouse, he stumbled upon a group of children playing in the fallen leaves. Their laughter and shouts pierced the autumn air, and for a moment, his heart lifted. He watched, mesmerized, as they crafted leafcrown hats and pretended to be kings, as he used to do as a child.

One child with sparkling eyes approached him. "Uncle, do you want to join us?" he asked, offering a leaf crown.

Aamir's initial hesitation gave way to a smile. As he played with the children abruptly, he wished,

-"…...Oh! How I wish I could be a Child again he lamented….Childhood means no tension, no responsibilities, and no boredom," he pleaded sincerely.
