Until, that is, exotic Rebecca (Anne Hathaway) flutters into the title character’s life: a startling femme fatale in fireengine red who offers McKenzie’s timid prison staffer both a whiff of temptation and the chance to escape the grim juvenile detention facility she works at when not pandering to her drunken ex-cop of a father (Shea Wigham). British director William Oldroyd – working from Ottessa Moshfegh’s 1960s-set 2015 novel – brings us a female-led story about a young woman kicking against her restricted circumstances, but halfway through a neat reversal deftly diverts the action into Coen brothers territory. A rash move on the part of psychologist Rebecca obliges the same from Eileen, suggesting that a vein of calculating criminality was never too far beneath that meekly submissive surface. McKenzie and Hathaway make an enticing duo in a film that grips tightly all the way to its slightly deflating conclusion. Yet it’s not just the ladies who shine; the reliable Wigham makes Eileen’s dad a casually cruel embodiment of everything she’s eager to escape.
