Each year, millions of tourists flock to Ibiza, drawn by its beautiful beaches and vibrant club scene. But as Sky Documentaries’ new series Ibiza Narcos reveals, the island was once a sleepy place and its transformation into one of the world’s party capitals was fuelled by a lucrative and dangerous drugs trade.
The three-parter, which follows earlier series Liverpool Narcos and Dublin Narcos, features interviews with many of the drug dealers and smugglers who have profited from Ibiza’s notoriety. It shows how the island first began to change when it became part of the hippy trail in the 1960s and 1970s, attracting free spirits who smoked marijuana and took LSD.
